Teaching Preschoolers About Daylight Saving Time

Teaching Preschoolers About Daylight Saving Time at Kids 'R' Kids Greatwood, preschool, daycare, childcare

You might not think of Daylight Saving Time as a fun thing to teach your child about, but kids love to learn, and the topic is full of great opportunity for lessons on time, history, and other parts of the world.

Have a History Lesson

Most likely, the concept of Daylight Saving Time is a new one to your child, so start by giving your kids a little background on the topic. Gather round and tell your children about how Daylight Saving Time originated when the US established different time zones. Specific start and end dates were established with the Uniform Time Act in 1966. Explain time zones and how they work—children will be amazed to learn about different parts of the world.

Grab a Map

Have fun with maps and showing your little ones diverse places in the world when telling them about Daylight Savings Time. You can get extra interactive by printing out or buying maps that your little ones can color in. Talk about travel and put stickers on different places they want to go and try to determine what time zone each place is in.

Get Crafty

Paper plate clocks are a good way to get your child learning through interaction and self-expression. All you need is: paper plates, pipe cleaners, and brads. Poke a hole in the middle of the plate and pull the pipe cleaners through—these act as the hands of your clock. Fasten the pipe cleaners with the brads and have your children decorate their clocks—just make sure they have all 12 hours! Play time games or ask your kiddos to display various times on their clocks—those who get it right get stickers to put on their clocks!

Teaching your preschooler about Daylight Saving Time is a sure way to get them thinking about other parts of the world and how everyone is connected by time. If your child is excited about history and fun facts, tell them more about the subject such as the fact that Daylight Savings Time is not enforced by law—states can choose to participate or to stay on standard time all year round. Have fun with it and don’t forget to change your clocks!
